A note about creative arts therapies:
Carl G. Jung stated, “Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.” The use of creative arts therapies in psychotherapeutic work, is an adjunct tool providing clients with a mode of expression where words fail to provide an answer.
Creative arts therapies, including art, play and sand tray therapy offer an alternative to talk therapy by giving life to the client’s pre-verbal conscious mind. I have found these therapies especially effective for trauma and its subsequent clinical issues, as the therapist facilitates a safe environment for the client to create a manifestation from their imagination.
About Becca Leitman
I am committed to treating each client with deep empathy, and supporting their path to healing.
I am a Washington State Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), with over ten years of experience working with children and families, and those formed through adoption and foster care. I offer individualized and family counseling services from a relational psychotherapeutic approach. As an integrated clinician my treatment approach is deeply rooted in attachment, and I utilize the creative arts therapies in assisting clients to communicate inner challenges.
I hold a Master of Social Work from New York University and a Bachelor of Photojournalism from Boston University. Additionally, I was trained in Art and Dance Therapy at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and I am currently working towards a Post Graduate Certificate in Attachment Focused Trauma Therapy.
As an adoptee in a mixed family of both biological and adopted children, working in the adoption field has given me the opportunity to share my own adoption story and search for identity. I draw upon my personal experience, and understand complex family systems, as well as the grief and loss surrounding adoption, divorce and the death of a family member.
Additionally, I have spent extensive time traveling all over the world, and have worked in orphanages in Ghana, Costa Rica and Cambodia. These diverse experiences helped me to develop cultural humility, therefore informing my understanding of the global human experience.
Deciding to begin therapy is not an easy choice, and I commend you for your bravery in beginning this journey. Collaboratively we will explore the hurdles preventing growth, and the patterns of behavior that are no longer helpful but difficult to move beyond. I look forward to meeting you, and working together.
